Who are we? 
Austin Animal Center‘s mission is to
protect the health, safety, and welfare of our animals by providing shelter, care, and lifesaving efforts. We are located in the largest No Kill community in the country and maintain a live outcome rate of 90 percent and above. The Center’s live outcome rate for the calendar year 2018 was 97.69 percent. As the City of Austin’s municipal shelter, the Austin Animal Center strives to protect the health and wellbeing of residents and their pets, through rabies control, the sheltering of stray or lost pets, fostering and adoption programs, and the enforcement of animal-related laws.
The Shelter Veterinarian leads the Center’s medical team and is responsible for the health of the animals that enter the shelter. We are looking for a veterinarian who can contribute to the programs and services that support the shelter’s live outcome goal in accordance with No Kill philosophies.
What's the job? 
As a Shelter Veterinarian, your primary responsibility will be performing and monitoring all aspects of health-related tasks, including physical examinations, diagnostic tests, surgical procedures, and the maintenance of records. Shelter Veterinarians initiate and follow up on treatment plans, assist in the timely and humane movement of animals through the shelter, and assist staff in disease control protocols and procedures. The Shelter Veterinarian leads and supervises a team of four full-time veterinarians, eight PRN veterinarians, and one veterinary service supervisor. The job is busy, fast-paced and rewarding.

What are the requirements?
  • Graduation from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Medical Doctor degree.
  • Five (5) years’ experience as a veterinarian, preferably in a Shelter environment.
  • Requires at least two (2) years of managerial and/or supervisory experience.
  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas.
  • DEA License for controlled substances

This candidate will have demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to consult, negotiate, and liaise effectively with a diverse range of people both verbally and in writing. The ideal candidate has experience providing veterinary services in an open-access, fast-paced shelter environment or working in a high-volume rescue organization.
