Title: Mentor
Organization: Explore Austin
Type: Volunteer
Time Commitment: 3-6 Years
Application Timeline: Open through November 1, 2018

About Explore Austin: Our mission is to change the lives of underserved youth through a six-year program of leadership, mentoring, and adventure. And we’ve been doing it since 2006.
Explore Austin uses mentoring and outdoor adventure to transform the lives of youth from low-income communities so they can reach their full potential. Through a leadership based outdoor adventure curriculum coupled with social-emotional learning components and long-term mentoring, Explore Austin is improving the well-being of each participant, their families, and the community.
Research shows when youth have a long-term caring adult in their life, access to challenging outdoor activities, and opportunities to lead others and themselves, they are more confident and prepared to reach their highest level of success. Explore Austin matches low-income, high potential, 6th grade “Explorers” with caring and committed adult mentors and start them on a six-year journey including nine Saturday Challenges and a week-long Summer Wilderness Trip that increases in difficulty and distance from home each year.
What makes this program unique is the length of time Explore Austin volunteer Mentors commit to their Explorers. Explorers begin in sixth grade and their mentors stay with them through the graduation of high school and beyond into their adult lives. Over the course of the six-year program, each Explorer spends more than 1,300 hours with their Mentors and fellow Explore teammates, creating lifelong growth in character, integrity, courage, and grit.

The Goal:
  • To connect Austin's double burden (low-income youth living in areas of concentrated poverty) and minority youth (whom we call “Explorers”) with caring, adult role models (Mentors) and introduce them to life-changing outdoor experiences, that will help them build their self-confidence and leadership capabilities.

The How:
  • Youth enter the Program as sixth-graders and become part of a 20-member team. Each team embarks on 9 Saturday Challenges and 1 week-long Summer Wilderness Trip every year (through high school)
  • Saturday Challenges are local adventure-based activities like hiking, paddling, climbing, and mountain biking, designed to build teamwork, leadership, and confidence.
  • Summer Wilderness Trips are backcountry excursions to places like TX, OK, AR, NM, CO, and WY designed to create a low risk environment for Explorers to be challenged mentally, physically, and emotionally and where Explorers and Mentors alike put their new skills to test.

The Mentor volunteer position includes:
  • Ongoing volunteer opportunity with a 3-6 year commitment
  • Regular programming one Saturday a month during the academic year and one week in the summer
  • Direct mentoring to 15 Austin-area teens, alongside 4 co-Mentors
  • Outdoor activities taught by professional Trip Leaders including rock climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, backpacking, and hiking
  • Involvement in a strong community of 100+ fellow Mentors

Our Mentors:
  • Live in Austin
  • Have a love of the outdoors (or want to cultivate one!)
  • Are committed and caring
  • Have experience working with youth
  • Hold a strong desire to give back
  • Demonstrated leadership experience

If you cannot commit to full-time mentoring, you can still become a substitute Mentor. Please email christina.ewin@exploreaustin.org to register or with any questions about the Explore Austin program.
