Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two years experience in repair and maintenance of residential and commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems.

Completion of accredited training in air conditioning and refrigeration systems may substitute for one year of the required experience.


Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess Texas Class C driver license in good standing.
EPA Refrigerant Recovery Certification
Must be a registered HVAC Tech with Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.



Physical Requirements:
Continuous outdoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying up to 50 lbs., lifting up to 50lbs., client/ customer contact, indoor activity, exposure to electrical hazards, explosive hazards, biological hazards, dust/mites hazards.  May require employee to be medically cleared to wear respirator.

This position will be filled at multiple levels: Heating & Refrigeration Mechanic I ($17.11-$21.29) or Heating & Refrigeration
Mechanic II ($19.36-$24.59).

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, and if required for the position, or if driving a City vehicle or a personal vehicle for City business, hold a current applicable driver’s license, and have no more than six (6) points assessed on Driver Record Evaluation (DRE). ON-CALL/CALL BACK RESPONSIBILITIES:
Position may require on-call or call back responsibilities.

ASSESSMENT:
A computerized Heating & Refrigeration skills assessment will be required for this position.

OVERTIME:
Overtime may be required with or without notice.

VETERAN:
Veteran candidates will be required to provide a copy of their DD214 at the time of interview.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL:
This position is categorized as Essential Personnel, who are required to come to work during emergencies or bad weather if they are scheduled to work, and in some cases even when they are not scheduled.

CHBC:
Top candidate will be subject to a minimum 10 year criminal background check and security threat assessment.

LANGUAGE:
Must have the ability to read, write and fluently speak in English.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Frequent/continuous walking and standing up to up to 6 – 8 hrs. per day; Occasional sitting to do administrative / computer work; Frequent squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, and stepping up; Ability to work outdoors for prolonged periods of time, being exposed to high heat temperatures (including sun rays), and cold temperatures; Ability to use hand and fingers to grasp, pull, twist and hold and/or reach above shoulder level; Frequent kneeling and crawling; Continuous lifting/carrying items from 1 – 50 lbs; Occasional lifting/carrying items from 71 – 100 lbs. + (with assistance); Continuous pulling or pushing or items from 1 – 50 lbs; Frequent pulling or pushing of items weighing from 21 – 50 lbs; Occasional pulling or pushing of items weighing from 51 – 100 lbs. + (with assistance); Occasional work in confined spaces; Exposure to high level/ aircraft noise (using PPE); Ability to turn head from side to side and twist neck up and down; Must possess the physical and mental capacity to safely operate a motor vehicle during day or night time.

Preferred Qualifications

Heating & Refrigeration Mechanic I:

  • 2 year experience in repair and maintenance of commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. EPA Recovery Certification preferred.
    Heating & Refrigeration Mechanic II:
  • 3 years experience in repair and maintenance of commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
  • Valid Texas Drivers License

     

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1. Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, ice machines, and other equipment.
2. Assists with installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing and performing start-up of building automation system network devices and components.
3. Installs heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation equipment and systems.
4. Calibrates and services thermostats.
5. Performs basic service on HVAC equipment including pumps, air handlers, cooling towers, and other mechanical systems.
6. Reads and interprets profiles and blue prints.
7. Maintains appropriate records.
8. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
