Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus four (4) years of experience in a related field.

 

 
 
Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.
 
 
 
Completion of an accredited automotive, diesel or related certification program may substitute for required experience up to a maximum of six (6) months. An Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for experience, up to a maximum of two (2) years.
 
 

Licenses or Certifications:
Requires a Class “C” driver’s license. If required, must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within ninety (90) days of employment with the City.
 
If applicable, must be licensed within six (6) months of employment as a Texas State Vehicle Inspector in accordance with Texas Department of Public Safety procedures and regulations.
 
Must be certified within six (6) months of employment with respect to EPA standards in air conditioning service, repairs, and Freon recovery, including Freon recovery equipment operations.
 
 


Physical Requirements:
Essential duties are performed in a service center environment with exposure to a variety of motorized equipment, spare parts, tools, oil and lubrication, corrosive liquids, and other potentially hazardous materials.
 
Incumbent may be exposed to loud noise, warm and cold conditions, standing for long periods, frequent stooping and bending, and lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
 
Individuals will need to have good eye-and-hand coordination and read and write in dimly-lit conditions.
 
 
 
 

Equipment Hand Tool Requirements:

An incumbent must provide his or her own hand tools, including wrenches, sockets, ratchets, toolbox, etc., as a condition of employment.
The individual must meet the minimum hand tool requirements within six (6) months of employment.

DRIVER’S LICENSE
This position must travel between various locations as part of the regular job duties and individual will be required to drive a City vehicle. Position will also be required to drive on the AOA. Successful candidate must be in possession of a Texas driver’s license as authorized by the Texas Transportation Code. A driving record verification will be conducted. Applicants for positions for which City driving is an essential function must meet the standards of the program: age 18 or older, current applicable driver’s license, proof of insurability, and no more than eight (8) points assessed on Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) based on Department of Public Safety (DPS) Driver Record Report. CDL REQUIREMENT
Position requires a license for the operation of commercial vehicles in the state of Texas within 90 days of employment. To be considered for employment in this position, applicants must comply with Department of Transportation, Federal Regulations and the Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing rules as outlined by the City of Austin Drug and Alcohol Policy for Drivers of Commercial Motor Vehicles. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing will be conducted on selected applicant.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 
Physical Requirements:
Exposure to gasoline and electrical and dust mite’s hazards. Using hands and fingers to twist, tighten and squeeze tools / items to perform work. Ability to read and follow mechanical directions / blueprints. Frequent squatting, bending, twisting upper body. Frequent standing and walking for long periods of time / some climbing and stepping up. Able to work outdoors for prolong periods of time, exposed to high heat temperatures, cold, and aircraft noise. Exposure to mechanical hazards, fumes / odors / hazards, toxic waste / material hazards. Occasional kneeling, crawling. Occasional lifting items up to 50 lb. Occasional carrying items up to 50 lb. Operate a variety of types of gasoline and diesel equipment, light & heavy. May be exposed to load noise. Must possess the physical and mental capacity for decision-making and comprehension and to safely operate motor vehicle during daytime and / or night time.

Pay Range

$22.83 – $28.69

  • Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 
  • Shift may change according tot departmental needs. Work hours may include after hours, holidays, and weekend work.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


  1. Performs complex gasoline and diesel engine tune-ups and overhauls.

  2. Performs specialized work and repairs on engines, carburetors, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and other complex vehicle components.

  3. Repairs heavy equipment specifically serviced by the service center.

  4. Disassembles, repairs, services, reassembles, and reinstalls vehicle accessories and systems, including brakes, transmissions, hydraulic or pneumatic systems, cooling systems and radiators, air conditioning, suspension, vehicle generators, carburetors and fuel injection, starters, and pumps.

  5. Performs wheel alignments on all types of heavy equipment, such as crawler loaders, backhoes and bulldozers.

  6. Operates and uses acetylene torch to repair equipment.

  7. Records maintenance and service data on designated forms.

  8. Performs preventive maintenance, as required.
